Checking your Website Stats
By admin | December 17, 2007
This post is relevant for our Linux hosted sites.
Todays post is another in a series designed to teach you more about your server, and the various things it can do.
I will soon be writing posts on various methods that you can use to attract traffic to your website. But, before I do that, I want to show you where/how you can measure the fruits of your labours.
It is very important that you keep an eye on your statistics. The information that can be mined from them is absolute marketing “gold”.
The pretty graphs showing the steady stream of traffic that is coming to my sites is always fun to watch. Usually because the traffic volume is proportional to my earnings.
Simple rule -> MORE TRAFFIC = MORE MONEY
In my opinion, some of the most important statistics are the ones that show me which search terms people are using to find my site. Once you know exactly what your visitors are already typing into their search engines then you can use this information to expand your keyword campaigns to incorporate additional similar search terms. Or, you can attempt to SEO (Search Engine Optimise) some of your sites pages for those particular keywords you are being found on, in an attempt to naturally rank better on the search engines for those particular terms.
Alternatively, if you are paying for advertising, then you can see exactly how much traffic your “paid source” is sending to you (the stats show you the referring pages). This is also important, because it allows you to quantify, and possibly discontinue, the unprofitable campaigns, and to rather spend that money on the more profitable campaigns.
I hope you can see what an immensely powerful tool this information can be in your marketing arsenal.
Good stats are so important, that I have installed 3 different stats packages on your server. They show similar metrics, and you can use whichever you prefer. Personally I don’t use Analog much .. I prefer Webaliser and AwStats.
To access your stats you …
- Log in to your server control panel.
- Click once on the “Web/FTP Stats” icon.
- Click one of the various link options.
That will open the stats package of your choice, and from there its very easy and intuitive to use.
I hope you have fun looking through your stats, and hopefully it triggers a lot of ideas for more keywords that you can target.
If you have any questions about your stats then please do not hesitate to give me a shout, or even better, drop a comment in below here so that everyone can benefit from the answers.
Have a profitable day.
